Resource or Project Abstract
The proposed research will focus and various aspects of spent mushroom compost management, including the development of a "Best Management Practice" manual for mushroom growers in order to promote effective disposal strategies and to impart ownership of SMC management on the relevant mushroom growers, farmers and authorities. These plans will take into account the volume of SMC produced in areas, the proximity of mushroom farms to other agricultural outlets, local weather patterns, and variability in soil type and nutrient content. Other outlets for SMC will also be address including a study on the use of SMC in constructed wetlands for treating acid mine drainage, in an attempt to use a waste product as a solution to the remediation of the Avoca River.

| The research team involved in this project strongly believe that its proposed area of research strengthens Ireland?s obligations under various EU legislation, in particular the EU Biofuels Directive (2003/30/EC), Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC) and, Waste Directive (75/442/EEC) and associated Landfill Directive (99/31/EC).
To date, no special or standard legislations are specifically enforced for the correct management of SMC immediately after cropping in Ireland. Such regulations would greatly aid the mushroom grower in implementing appropriate consistent management of SMC, in terms of appropriate sanitisation practices, proper storage with relevant runoff controls and, finally, providing coherent and reliable information on the further use options for SMC, in association with applicable nutrient management plans. A best management practice plan should be implemented in Ireland in order to promote effective disposal strategies and to impart ownership of SMC management on the relevant mushroom growers, farmers and authorities. Finally, the possibility of government legislation requiring possession of a permit for the storage and transfer of SMC might foster a more cautious approach in the area of SMC management and its further treatment. |
