Resource or Project Abstract
*** Small-scale Study Report - see note under Supplemnentary Information ***
In this project, a hybrid (part-empirical, part-mechanistic) model of N2O emissions from grassland, developed in Scotland and now known as the B-LINE 2 model, has been adapted to simulate N2O emissions from Irish grassland soils: both from grazed pastures at the Johnstown Castle Research Centre, Wexford, and also from 5 major Irish soil types used in lysimeter studies at the same location. The model, which uses the Simile modelling format, predicts emissions on the basis of soil water-filled pore space (WFPS), soil temperature and soil mineral N content, and runs on a daily timestep. WFPS and temperature are derived from mechanistic submodels, and the change of soil mineral N with time after fertilisation is determined empirically from experimental data.
