Resource or Project Abstract
*** Small-scale Study Report - see note under Supplemnentary Information ***
The aim of the small scale study was to develop and screen novel passive sampling materials for monitoring priority pollutants such as pesticides and hydrocarbons in the aquatic environment. The polymer films are made from PVC and contain a plasticizer which act to make the films flexible in nature as well as to enrich the analytes in the water sample. Measurements are carried out by immersing the polymer films in aqueous solution containing the relevant chemical and the recording an infrared spectra of the exposed material. Each analyte has a characteristic infrared absorption spectrum and this can be exploited to measure the analytes presence in the sample. Absorbance data for the pesticide simazine can be recorded at 1577 wavenumbers cm-1, alachor at 1104cm-1 and naphthalene at 2900cm-1/1210cm-1. The results obtained from this small-scale study indicate that there is potential for the materials to be used in the determination of selected priority pollutants in the aquatic environment. These results provide proof of concept and will lead to a large-scale study to develop novel materials as passive samplers for environmental monitoring.
