Resource or Project Abstract
The interface between transportation and the environment is somewhat of a paradox. On the one hand, passengers and freight require transportation activities in terms of their mobility demands. These demands range from relatively short trips associated with daily living to economic demands associated with international trade. On the other hand, transport activities put significant demands on economies in terms of infrastructure delivery and the negative impacts of traffic congestion. The costs of these impacts are most heavily felt by the environment and society. The transportation sector is becoming increasingly associated with environmental problems.
Transportation technology currently relies heavily on oil based fuels. In addition to unsustainability problems associated with a finite supply, other dominant negative factors are pollutants and noise impacts associated with the technology. The environmental impacts can be divided into two types: 1) direct impacts where the cause and effect relationship is straight forward and well understood. 2) indirect impacts where the impacts are secondary with more complex cause and effect relationships driving them.
The costs incurred by transportation activities,
in particular environmental damage are generally not fully covered by the transportation user. The lack of consideration of the real costs of transportation could explain several environmental problems. If environmental costs are not included, the usage of the car is subsidized by society and the costs are negative environmental impacts
