Resource or Project Abstract
The 68th United Nations (UN) General Assembly declared 2015 the International Year of Soils (IYS) and accordingly nominated the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) with responsibility to implement the IYS 2015 objectives. Soil protection and sustainable soil management are at the core of the objectives of the IYS. Specifically in relation to soil protection, the UN calls for effective policies and actions for sustainable management and protection of soil resources and also advocates the rapid capacity enhancement of soil information collection and monitoring at all levels (global, regional and national) (FAO, 2015a). Despite the growing recognition that soil is an important non-renewable resource that delivers multiple benefits to society there is a lack of legal protection for the soil resource. Soil quality (ecosystem services and goods provided by the soil) and protection is vital to ensure soil resources and sustainable development into the future.
A meta-data catalogue was also developed. The Meta-data catalogue is an online database which summarises all soil related research conducted in Ireland in the last 15 years. Providing an abstract, contact information and key-word search function for future analyses.
