Resource or Project Abstract
"This project was tasked with identifying and mapping the location of all relevant Water Research Infrastructure (WRI) around Ireland. Then to develop a database of this key information on WRI and make it available online to the water research community, in an easy-to-use format. Looking forward, it also aimed to develop a WRI roadmap including recommendations on how best to advance WRI in Ireland.
At the time of writing, almost 80 WRIs have been uploaded to the database, across 120 locations, by over 20 organisations in Ireland. The results were collated in a new database and made available online, through the EPA?s DROPLET website (http://erc.epa.ie/droplet/). The data is provided by the research infrastructure managers themselves who are responsible for the WRI. It is a central database for information on all WRI in Ireland, including types of WRI available for the various research areas and applications, from freshwater, marine, climate and agriculture. The WRI database raises the profile of individual WRIs and helps connect the water research community by giving access to information on WRI the island of Ireland, their facilities, services and areas of research. This will help researchers pursue new opportunities, partner and collaborate with colleagues, particularly for interdisciplinary teams. The widest possible access to research infrastructures is considered to increase the value for money for the state and for the research community in general. DROPLET platform is to be much more than a simple repository of information. It aims to provide a destination website with dynamic content about water research infrastructures, which will enable better use of existing resources and planning of future resources than is currently possible.
The data will also help ensure effective planning for future WRI, by identifying gaps and opportunities for existing and new infrastructure. The mapping study findings, a literature review of RI strategies and policies, and interviews with RI managers, together informed recommendations on how to develop Ireland?s WRI for the future. In general, the quality of water research in Ireland is excellent: there is good water RI nationally, in particular marine RI, and an active research community in the water area. "

"To conduct excellent water research, appropriate Research Infrastructure (RI) is required with ease of access for researchers, support services (e.g. assisting with use of the RI) and openness to assisting public and private sector innovation (e.g. through trialling new technologies). Much of the water-related research and monitoring facilities around Ireland are operated on a stand-alone model, neither connected to other pieces of infrastructure, nor easily accessible to other research activity for reasons of lack of knowledge of them, unclear access procedures, or financial constraints for staff or maintenance cost. This is a major challenge that needs to be addressed to enable more effective water research.
At a European level, the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) Roadmap and the RI support schemes co-ordinate investment in large RIs across Europe. At the national level, Ireland developed a RI roadmap in 2007, which was updated in 2015. However, the water sector is not identified in these plans as a specific area; and WRI per se is not specifically identified. Water research is a broad research area and consists of a number of sub-areas, ranging from freshwater and catchments, to the marine environment, and biodiversity of these ecosystems. This has resulted in numerous and diverse organisations being involved in setting the strategy and providing funding for water research, and in turn water research infrastructure in Ireland, brought together by the Water Research Co-ordination Group (WRCG). The origins of the present project lie in perceived gaps in overall planning, managing and communication of information about the wide range of water research infrastructures in Ireland. At the outset of this project, there was no national database of Ireland?s WRI available to the public or to researchers." |
Supplementary Information |
The database provides data on a set of WRIs in Ireland as submitted to the Project Team, consisting of its name, and key information on the lead organisation, research area, funder, type of RI, sensor platform, communications platform, location, date of deployment, date of retirement, available for research, website, description and keywords. The WRI database is being provided to the EPA as part of the deliverables of the project, but with personal contact information (name, email) of RI managers removed.
