At present, there are over 500 operating quarries within Ireland, producing sand & gravel and crushed rock aggregates, and dimension stone for the construction industry. Local authorities are responsible for the planning and environmental regulation of quarry developments (extracting non-scheduled minerals) and ancillary facilities (including concrete and asphalt / macadam manufacturing facilities). Ireland is one of the few remaining countries in Western Europe that does not have a National Aggregates Policy. This is despite having a substantially higher aggregate
demand per head of population than any other EU state.
The main project objectives were (1) to provide an inventory of commercial pits and quarries in Ireland,(2) assess aggregate supply and demand in Ireland, (3) review environmental management and restoration with the sector, (4) review the current planning and environmental framework, (5) prepare environmental management guidelines for operators and regulators, (6) consider the future development of the sector in terms of planning and environmental contexts.

Description of Geographical Characteristics of This Project or Dataset
Environmental inspections of over 20 operating pits and quarries were carried out during 2001 and 2002 to assess environmental practice. These pits/quarries selected covered a broad distribution of size, type, and geographical location. All quarries were located in the Republic of Ireland.
