Resource or Project Abstract
This project set out to examine the use of biological-based approaches to facilitate the removal of nutrients, particularly phosphates, from food processing streams. The work aimed to develop biological management procedures, incorporating molecular-based methodologies to assess the performance of biological nutrient removal (BNR) systems treating these food wastes. While further work will need to be undertaken, it appears that the control of influent quality may be a key factor to aid in the failure to ensure sufficient levels of Short-Chain-Fatty-Acids (SCFAs) may be a contributory factor in their malfunctioning.

Description of Geographical Characteristics of This Project or Dataset
(Project 4): A pilot-scale study was conducted at the Kerry Ingredients Plant, Listowel, Co. Kerry, Ireland to investigate the key operational parameters involved in the BNR process. Kerry Ingredients is a diary-processing company the produce casein and whey products.

Previous work had demonstrated an ability of sludges from dairy waste streams to perform Enhanced Biological Phosphate Removal (EBPR) and other researchers had reported acid-stimulated luxury PO4 update in municipal waste-water treatement systems. This project then set out to examine the potential of using both EBPR and acid-stimulated PO4 uptake as novel methods for PO4 removal from food industry waste-water treatment systems. |
