Resource or Project Abstract
Ireland, along with its other EU partners, agreed in 2001 "to halt the decline in biodiversity by 2010" and to "restore habitats and natural systems". If the decline in Ireland?s biological diversity is to be halted, then the resource needs to be described and quantified, and systems put in place to monitor changes to that resource. The National Biodiversity Data Centre's role will be crucial in achieving this objective. The Data Centre will work to make data on Ireland?s biological diversity available for the following specific uses:
- The implementation of international conventions and European directives
- Monitoring programmes
- Distribution mapping & modelling
- Publications
- Future scientific programmes
- Documentation of ecological and bio-geographical information.
The availability of good quality biological data can also make a significant contribution to informing and evaluating the success of other policy areas. This is particularly relevant for cross-cutting strategies such as the National Sustainable Development Strategy and the Climate Change Strategy, and for sectoral policies in agriculture, forestry, marine, planning, transport & tourism.

The National Biodiversity Data Centre cannot guarantee and assumes no legal liability or responsibility for the accuracy, currency or completeness of the information. Any absence of information in the National Biodiversity Data Centre system does not necessarily indicate an absence of records for a given area or species, the area or species may simply be unrecorded. Similarly, any absence of information on the National Biodiversity Data Centre system for an area, does not necessarily imply a low biodiversity value for that area. Users shall respect restrictions of access to sensitive data. In order to make attribution of use for owners of the data possible, the data provider must be retained with every data record. Users must publicly acknowledge, in conjunction with the use of the data, the data providers whose biodiversity data they have used. Data providers may require additional attribution of specific collections within their institutions. Users must comply with additional terms and conditions of use set by the data provider. Where these exist they will be available through the metadata associated with the data. |

Geographical and Spatial Information Related To This Resource
Description of Geographical Characteristics of This Project or Dataset
The mapping system at NBDC offers access to biodiversity related datasets from all over the island of Ireland. Some datasets are offered on a regional scale while others cover the entire geographical area of Ireland. There are some access constraints on viewing the data - some datasets are only viewable at certain resolution it 1KM square grids. http://maps.biodiversityireland.ie/Map.aspx allows the display of available data.
