Resource or Project Abstract

The 2011 mercury results from Mace Head were amended on 13 June 2013 to reflect an error in the data.

Emissions from industry, particularly stationary combustion and metal production, are the main source of heavy metals in ambient air. Mercury is also emitted from waste incineration. Ireland has no significant sources of mercury.

Mercury is carcinogenic and also has significant non-cancer effects. It can produce central nervous system damage and adversely affect the kidneys. It may damage developing foetuses and decrease fertility in males and females.
