Resource or Project Abstract
This conference comes at the midway point of the STRIVE Programme (2007-2013) and also at a challenging time for Ireland as we look back over a decade of substantial changes in our economy and in society. During this period, Ireland?s environment has also experienced considerable change. We have seen positive developments such as the introduction of new environmental legislation and a significant investment in waste water treatment infrastructure. We have also seen less welcome developments such as the continuing effects of eutrophication in our freshwaters and rises in greenhouse gas emissions.
Monitoring and managing change in the environment is a central part of the EPA?s functions and responsibilities. Science and innovation play a fundamental role in our work, by delivering the knowledge required to tackle complex environmental issues. Studies and models track and forecast changes in the environment while new technologies deliver innovative tools for monitoring its status. We are fortunate in Ireland that the past decade has also seen the development and expansion of the environmental research community. These researchers and innovators provide the expertise and skills needed to support environmental protection at national and international levels while also playing a critical part in contributing to the new knowledge economy.
Since 2000, the EPA, on behalf of the DEHLG, has provided funding of approximately ?110 million in environmental research and innovation. This investment has supported over 600 research projects resulting in more than 200 reports and 1,400 datasets. This conference is looking at the vital contribution of environmental research in support of a sustainable future for Ireland. The abstracts featured in this book highlight new developments across a broad range of environmental issues. A further function of this event is to showcase the research funded by the EPA and to underline the importance of the environment as a research priority for Ireland.
