Resource or Project Abstract
Natural wetlands have the capacity to cleanse through-flowing water. This is achieved through a combination of physical, chemical and biological processes. In addition wetlands provide life support for a wide diversity of plants and animals.
In his introduction to the book ‟Wetlands in Danger‟ (1993) David Bellamy states ? It has been calculated that 1 hectare of tidal wetlands can do the job of £ 100,000 worth of state of the art waste water treatment and many communities and companies are recreating wetlands to cleanse their waste?
Constructed wetlands are fundamentally designed to function as natural wetlands, optimising their water treatment capabilities and providing other functional benefits.
The treatment of agricultural wastes presents special challenges in Ireland because of the large volumes and the potential to contaminate water resources. A wide variety of techniques have been deployed to address the problem, each with advantages and disadvantages.
The use of constructed wetlands for the treatment of agricultural wastes has, until recently, been limited. In the past few years interest in the use of constructed wetlands for a range of situations has grown. This has prompted the Environmental Protection Agency to investigate the use constructed wetlands in various applications.
This literature review and desk study was commissioned by the EPA to study the use of constructed wetlands in agriculture.
