Resource or Project Abstract
In order to replicate operation of a typical domestic boiler in the laboratory, 13 boilers (6 oil-fired, 4 gas-fired and 3 wood pellet) were monitored over a heating season and the operating characteristics such as total running time, number of start-ups, typical running time during each cycle were recorded. This recorded data was then analysed to determine a suitable duty cycle for use in the laboratory and was also used to determine an appropriate emission factor that accounted for all operating modes.

Geographical and Spatial Information Related To This Resource
Description of Geographical Characteristics of This Project or Dataset
Boilers were installed at the following locations: Clane, Kildare; Donadea, Kildare; Avoca, Wicklow; Drumcondra, Dublin; Stillorgan, Dublin; Raheny, Dublin, Inchicore, Dublin and Wicklow
Flue gas temperature was recorded at 1 minute intervals over an extended period of time at 13 different locations and the resulting temperature-time trace was analysed to determine total running time, number of start-ups etc. This data was then used in the laboratory and also to derive an average emission factor that allows for all boiler operating modes

Supplementary Information About This Resource
In this section some supplementary information about this resource is outlined. Lineage information helps us to understand why this project was carried out, what policy or research requirements did it fulfil, etc. Lineage is important in understanding the rationale behind the carrying out of a project or the collection of a specific dataset etc. Links to web sites, applications, papers, etc are outlined to provide you with additional information or supplementary reading about the project or dataset
Lineage information about this project or dataset |
This project examined PM and NOx emissions from wood pellet, oil-fired and gas-fired domestic heating boilers, as well as non road transport. This data set contains results performed on the wood pellet boiler in a laboratory setting to determine PM and NOx emission factors as a function of boiler operating mode. Other performance factors such as efficiency, fuel consumption and operating temperatures are also available. |
