Resource or Project Abstract
An independent study of public awareness, perceptions and attitudes towards domestic wastewater treatment systems was instigated in 2012 and subsequently received Small Scale Study funding under the EPA STRIVE research programme. The objective of this study was to inform the implementation of the first strand of the National Inspection Program, the public engagement strategy, by examining levels of awareness and subsequent behavioural tendencies among owners and users of DWWTSs. A follow-up survey was undertaken in late 2013 to investigate public attitudes towards information availability, content and sources, with the goal of informing both current and future engagement strategies.

Geographical and Spatial Information Related To This Resource
Description of Geographical Characteristics of This Project or Dataset
This survey was carried out among members of the public throughout the Republic of Ireland. The pre-engagement survey was carried out using a combination of an internet-based questionnaire distributed among the rural population via a number of national non-professional interest groups, and face-to-face group interviews. The post-engagement survey was solely internet based.

Lineage information about this project or dataset |
An independent study of public awareness, perceptions and attitudes towards DWWTSs was instigated in 2012 in light of the impending regulation and issues surrounding DWWTS as a primary contamination source for private wells. In late 2012 this study was identified as a valuable source of information on DWWTS users before any engagement strategy implementation, and was subsequently funded as a Small Scale Study under the STRIVE research programme. A second survey was funded to investigate post-engagement attitudes and behaviours among DWWTS users following the implementation of DWWTS regulation. |
