Resource or Project Abstract

The goal of the project was to predict the likely biological status of unmonitored lakes based on relationships between ecological status, catchment land use, population densities and hydrogeomorphological characteristics. In order to achieve this, the project comprised a number of interlinked objectives:
= Review of important lake and catchment predictors of ecological status.

= Review of current practice in other European Union member states regarding unmonitored water bodies.

= Prediction of typology for unmonitored lakes.

= Assessment of the relationships between hydrogeomorphological and land use attributes and biological status.

= Prediction of status in unmonitored lakes.
All objectives of the project had to be met using only map-derived characteristics, as no in-lakes measurements could be assumed to be available for the unmonitored lakes. The project dataset includes catchment land use and land cover data for 769 WFD lake catchments in Ireland and lake and catchment morphological and hydrological characteristics.

Lineage information about this project or dataset
The Water Framework Directive (WFD) (CEC, 2000) requires that all European Union (EU) Member States (MS) implement monitoring programmes to assess the status of their water bodies. For surface waters this status must be assessed using ecological and chemical status, the former includes assessing the response of the biota (cf. macroinvertebrates, macrophytes and phytobenthos, fish and phytoplankton) to pressure. The WFD has been transposed into Irish legislation by European Communities (Water Policy) Regulations 2003 (SI 722 of 2003), in which the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been tasked with developing and implementing monitoring programmes for surface and groundwater throughout Ireland. Monitoring programmes have been set up to reflect the range in physical variation across water bodies. As these cover a wide range of water bodies, they also reflect a gradient of pressures. The WFD outlined criteria for inclusion of water bodies in the monitoring programmes, e.g. size and protection status, and requires a subset of these water bodies be sampled for assignment of status. In the absence of sampling data, status for the other water bodies on the monitoring programme must be extrapolated. The current project seeks to fill this knowledge gap and assist in the management requirements of the EPA in assigning ecological status to unmonitored lake water bodies.

All parameters measured, their sources and units are described in the ReadMe sheet of the excel file. All methods used to collate them are detailed in the project report, available from the author.

This data set is a collation of data from a number of sources. In particular Katherine Webster (TCD), Claire Byrne (EPA) and Katie Tedd (GSI) provided data and assistance in analysis.
