Resource or Project Abstract

This social research programme has at its core an exploration and analysis of the values, beliefs and behaviour of the Irish population in relation to the environment. The project will be grounded in a large-scale representative sample survey of the adult population in Ireland, as well as an in-depth exploration of environmental meanings using qualitative methodologies. The qualitative aspects of the project investigate in greater depth some of the more salient environmental attitudes highlighted by the survey research and the theoretical models help to explain them. It also explores attitudes and mobilisations around other major environmental issues and environmental activism. Thus it explores a range of environmental discourses articulated by the public as well as examining how environmental activists are mobilised. Focus group and in-depth interview methodologies are used.

Lineage information about this project or dataset
This research programme on Environmental Attitudes, Values and Behaviour in Ireland included the completion and analysis of a quantitative national survey on environmental attitudes and behaviour, as well as two qualitative research projects. There are three subprojects "Trends in Irish Environmental Attitudes between 1993 and 2002", "Cultural Sources of Support on which Environmental Attitudes and Behaviours Draw", and "Environmental Attitudes and behaviours: Ireland in Comparative European Perspective".
Supplementary Information
Trends in Irish Environmental Attitudes Between 1993 and 2002 is the first main
data report from the Research Programme on Environmental Attitudes, Values and
Behaviour in Ireland. The aim of the report is to present the results from the
2001/2002 fielding of a national survey on environmental attitudes developed by the
International Social Science Programme (ISSP) and to compare these results with
the data from the 1993 fielding of much the same set of questions. The analysis is
based on a representative sample survey of 1257 adults interviewed between
December 2001 and February 2002.The second report focuses on exploring the cultural sources of support for pro-environmental attitudes
and behaviours. The data is based on a national, representative sample survey fielded at the end of 2001
and the beginning of 2002. The questionnaire used was that designed for international comparative
purposes by the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) with some additional questions
included for the population in the Republic of Ireland. The third report, the aim is to examine how the environmental values, attitudes and
behaviours of Irish people differ from those of their European neighbours. In
all of these reports the data set drawn upon was the survey research
generated through the International Social Survey Programme

Data, results, and questionaires are included in the reports (which are available to download).
