Resource or Project Abstract

The BIOFOREST GIS (containing 303 layers of data and information) amalgamates botanical and zoological field data, along with existing base data from national organisations such as Coillte, Environmental Protection Agency, Ordnance Survey Ireland and the National Parks and Wildlife Service. The GIS allows access to tabular data, imagery and metadata (data that is used to describe other data, examples of metadata include schema, table, index, view and column definitions) using ISO compliant standards for all of the datasets within the GIS. The BIOFOREST GIS is a fully functional, flexible and updateable GIS system. In tandem, the BIOFOREST Project is also utilising a licence-free and cost-free software system that can be run on any computer.

Geographical and Spatial Information Related To This Resource

Description of Geographical Characteristics of This Project or Dataset
In 2003 an extensive survey was conducted of 60 open spaces within 12 mature forests dominated by Sitka spruce. These spaces included glades, rides and roads. A special study was made of epiphytes. After the extensive survey was completed a manipulation experiment was designed to investigate the effect of different road widths on biodiversity. Roads of two different widths were established during the planting phase of eight forests. The surfaced width of road is the same in both: about 5m, but in the narrow treatment the total gap created was 15m, and in the wide treatment, 30m. Forests were Coillte-owned reforestation sites. For practical reasons the manipulations concentrated on internal forest road widths. At the planting stage of eight forests, designated stretches of road were made where the treeless width was the current standard of 15m, the other twice that at 30m. The manipulations were carried out in association with Coillte on reforestation sites in two clusters in Munster and Leinster. The planting season for this experiment was 2004/2005, and the field survey in 2005 will provide an initial assessment of any immediate effect on the biodiversity of the different widths used. These data will also form a baseline for the future monitoring of the experiment as the forest grows through the cycle described and investigated in Project 2.

Against the forestry background described above, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Council for Forest Research and Development (COFORD) arranged to jointly fund research on forest biodiversity from National Development Plan funds, in the ERTDI programme. The resulting ?BIOFOREST? project was a large-scale project running from 2001 to 2006 with the aim of providing some much-needed basic information on biodiversity in Irish plantation forests. The focus of this research was to illustrate the effects of different aspects of management on biodiversity within forests, from the planning stage through to the mature forest. The research had an applied orientation and objectives to feed directly into the updating of forest policy and practice documents.
Supplementary Information
The entire BIOFOREST system is available on DVD - it is a DVD containing 680Mb of data. When unzippped this expands to 4.6GB. You should check that your system can accomodate this data. Given the very large file size you cannot download this file directly from this archive. Please contact the responsible parties above for a copy of the DVD
