Resource or Project Abstract

Lough Arrow, Co. Sligo is a small freshwater limestone lake (12.5 km2), which has been characterized as 1a (at risk) in the lake water impact assessment for the water framework directive (WFD). This waterbody is utilized for a number of public and private drinking water schemes and is also a premier trout fishery. The main pollution pressures in this catchment are two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), septic tanks and livestock farming; all of which are recognised risk factors for Cryptosporidium and Giardia. This research project sampled six lake sites utilising zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) and native duck mussels (Anodonta) as biomonitors to determine the presence and viability of Cryptosporidium oocysts, Giardia cysts and three species of pathogenic microsporidia in Lough Arrow. Lake water, treated drinking water and sewage final effluent were also tested for the presence of these enteropathogens. Combined fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and immunofluorescent antibody (IFA) were utilized as biomolecular techniques to assess the presence and concentration of these pathogens. PCR analysis provided source-tracking information on human or animal pollution sources.
