Resource or Project Abstract
Particulate Matter (PM) less than ten micrometres in size (PM10) can penetrate deep into the respiratory system increasing the risk of respiratory and cardiovascular disorders. PM10 arises from direct emissions of primary particulate such as black smoke and formation of secondary PM in the atmosphere by reactions of gases such as sulphur dioxide and ammonia. The main sources of primary PM10 are incomplete burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and peat and emissions from road traffic, in particular diesel engines. Other sources of particulates include re-suspended dust from roads. Natural PM includes sea-salt and organic materials such as pollens. The diverse sources and impacts of PM make it one of the most challenging issues to address.

In 2005 the black smoke standards were replaced by PM monitoring requirements based on Directive 1999/30/EC (CEC, 1999). This Directive established limit values for PM10 mass concentration levels. Since 2010 this directice has been replaced by CAFE Directive 2008/50/EC. The PM10 daily mean limit of 50 μg/m3 should not be exceeded more than 35 times per calendar year. The annual mean PM10 limit value is 40 μg/m3. |
Supplementary Information |
PM10- this stands for Particulate Matter that is less than ten microns in diameter. Elevated PM levels can occur if meteorological conditions favouring poor dispersion of local emissions persist for an appreciable length of time, i.e. days to weeks. These types of events occur during stable warm or cold periods, which are often associated with conditions that favour transport of air from other European countries to Ireland. These air masses typically contains high concentrations of pollutants such as PM and contribute to increased levels across Ireland.
PM10 is measured using either of a TEOM, (tapered element oscillating microbalance) Leckel or Partisol sampler. The TEOM is a gravimetric instrument that draws ambient air through a filter, continuously weighing the filter and calculating near real time mass concentrations. The Leckel and Partisol samplers draw in a known volume of air. Particles within the air sample are collected on a pre-weighed filter, which are then analysed gravimetrically. Filters are exposed for a period of 24 hours. PM2.5 is measured in a similar manner FILENAME CONVENTION: To intuitively guide users on the data contained in each of the dataset files the FILENAMES shown abide by a simple convention. The first part of the filename corresponds to the station location where the monitoring took place, the second refers to the pollutant measured. The third part of the filename corresponds to the year of measurement. For datasets which contain data measured over two years rather than one the year provided includes the year when measurement commented at that station site. If measurement data was collected at using a mobile monitoring station the code TR will follow the pollutant name. FILE TYPES: For the most part files will be available in one of three different formats. MS Excel spreadsheet format (look for the XLS file name),Comma Separated formats (CSV file type), or plain text (TXT file type). The latter two will open in recent versions of MS Excel. |
