Resource or Project Abstract

TITLE: Toxicological Analysis and Chemical Correlation for Fine Particulate Matter in Transit to Cobh (TACCo)
the primary aim of the TACCo project was to provide a toxicological analysis of airborne fine particular matter (PM2.5 0.1) collected at a mid-harbour point in Cork Harbour (Haulbowline Naval Base), located 1 km south-west from the town of Cobh. TACCo represented an ?add-on? to the EPA-funded ELIPSE2 Study (O?Connor et al., 2011), which ran from 2006 to 2009. The main aims of the ELIPSE programme were to chemically characterise airborne particulate matter (PM2.5 0.1) present in the Port of Cork (Tivoli Docks) and to compare the results obtained with those determined in other locations, including a mid-harbour site (Haulbowline Naval Base). The specific driving force for the ELIPSE study was the worldwide recognition that ship emissions comprise a major, relatively unmeasured, source of pollution with potentially adverse effects on human health (Lu et al., 2006; Corbett et al., 2007). However, the project clearly showed that many sources of airborne particulates (including domestic solid fuels, road transport and industrial activities) affect air quality in the entire Cork harbour region. Hence, while shipping emissions contribute only a relatively small mass loading (~1%) to the emissions inventory in Tivoli small (20-600 nm) particles when assessment is made by particle numbers (18%).

Geographical and Spatial Information Related To This Resource

Description of Geographical Characteristics of This Project or Dataset
The Haulbowline Naval Base site (51° 50? N, 8° 18? 25 W) is located approximately 1 km south south-west of the large town of Cobh and approximately 1.75 km north-east of Ringaskiddy Deep Water Port. It is surrounded by three Cork City satellite population centres Carrigaline, Ringaskiddy and Crosshaven (Fig. 2.2). The whole region is influenced by industrial activities, including a natural gas power plant located east south-east of the receptor site at Aghada and an oil refinery located at Whitegate, production facilities centred around a cluster of industrial pharmaceutical companies based in and around the mid-harbour area to the south and south-west of the site, various transport networks, Ringaskiddy Deep Water Port facility and, finally, domestic heating sources. The site was established at the end of 2006 and is located on grounds belonging to the Irish Naval Service. Particulate matter collections (105 individual samples) were made here between April 2007 and May 2008 using a High-Volume Cascade Impactor (HVCI). An automated weather station (Casella Nomad) was co-located with the HVCI to record meteorological parameters.

The aim of TACCo was to provide toxicological analysis of airborne particular matter present in mid- Cork Harbour. Twelve months of continuous particulate matter collections (April 2007-April 2008) were made at the Irish Naval Services site on Haulbowline Naval Base (mid-harbour location), which yielded 105 individual samples for analysis.
