Resource or Project Abstract

PAHs are chemical compounds which consist of two or more fused aromatic rings made entirely
from carbon and hydrogen. PAHs have a number of industrial sources such as cokeries, primary
aluminium production and wood preservation. PAHs are also emitted domestically from the
combustions of solid fuels such as wood and coal and they can also be emitted from incomplete
combustion of fuel in automobiles. Cigarette smoke is also a source of PAHs.

PAHs are monitored based on the premise that one particular compound can be used as a marker
for all PAHs. This compound is benzo(a)pyrene (B(a)P) and the target value set out in the Fourth
Daughter Directive is based on B(a)P. B(a)P is monitored at five stations across Ireland.

Lineage information about this project or dataset
Directive 2004/107/EC (EP & CEU, 2004) established an annual target value of 1 ng/m3 in respect of B(a)P.
Supplementary Information
PaH's are measured gravimetrically using a pump which draws air through a filter. The filter is extracted and analysed in the lab by GC-MS.
