Resource or Project Abstract
HYDROFOR is an EPA and DAFM-supported multi-sector co-operative project to investigate the impacts of forestry operations on Ireland?s aquatic ecology. In addition to further investigating the nature and effects of these impacts, the study partners are assessing the effectiveness of certain measures such as riparian buffer strips to mitigate these impacts. Impacts under study include acidification, eutrophication, sedimentation and hydromorphological change. Among the things that make HYDROFOR unique is that its study partners are not relying solely on data generated in their own extensive field sampling and experimentation. Rather, they are blending their own newly generated data with those of others? previous and complimentary studies, and they are updating and supplementing these older datasets wherever possible. Several modern innovations in mapping, sampling, modelling, etc. are thus being applied to not only new findings but also many of the older datasets - the knowledge base upon which the HYDROFOR study is built. Study partners include University College Dublin, University College Cork, National University of Ireland - Galway and Ireland?s Marine Institute, and researchers? professions span the natural, engineering and social sciences.

The data currently inlcluded and to be included in the database were generated in multiple regions throughout Ireland. The major concentrations of monitoring sites are in Counties Wicklow, Galway, Mayo, Kerry and Cork.

HYDROFOR is the latest comprehensive follow-on effort to a series of studies designed to better characterise the relationships between forests and forestry operations and water quality as it effects aquatic ecology in Ireland. Among the more recent studies from which HYDROFOR follows on is the FORWAT Project, which contributed substantively to Ireland's national Further Characterisation Report for Forestry and Water led by the Western River Basin District and published in 2008. The national Further Characterisation Report collection were done pursuant to requirements in the European Union Water Framework Directive. |

Key outputs of HYDROFOR include the Consolidated Forest and Water Interactions Database and multiple peer-reviewed academic journal article publications from authors at the three partner institutions: University College Dublin, University College Cork and National University of Ireland - Galway.
Fifty per cent of funding from the project was from DAFM. Database Details: NOTE: Database will be released on public access later in 2013. Please contact the authors for further information. Major categories of parameters in the database include: general identification of sites; forest characteristics; forestry operation designations; mitigation measure indications; subcatchment (hydrologic) characteristics; atmospheric metrics; hydrochemical quality indicators for surface waters; aquatic ecology indicators for surface waters; groundwater quality indicators, subsurface soil characterisations; and riparian area cover characterisations. Subcatchment delineations are created from Ireland's 20-metre-grid Digital Elevation Model. ArcHydro was used in ESRI ArcGIS to delineate subcatchments Major sampling methods included: automated flow-paced water quality sampling; kick sampling for benthic macroinvertebrates, flume sampling for lake plankton; net sampling for salmonids. Multiple non-numerical variables are included among the multiple columns of data. Provided in the master database is a list of variables with coinciding type designations (e.g., categorical variable). All data not designated 'continuous variable' in this manner is non-numerical. ESRI ArcGIS 10 with Spatial Analyst and ArcHydro extensions were used predominantly to generate GIS outputs for this project. Limited GIS outputs were generated via MapWindows open source GIS and its built-in catchment delineation tool. Multiple layers of GIS data were used to generate data in this database. The major data layers include: FIPS, Coillte Sales Proposal, Coillte Subcompartment, Met Eireann weather, National 20-metre-grid Digital Elevation Model, EPA WFD, EPA water quality monitoring, GSI soil and geology. |
