Resource or Project Abstract
On Monday 28th August 2006 an MI-EPA intertidal study (cruise number MT0106) was carried out at a station located east of Mutton Island in inner Galway Bay (53º 15.24?N; 9° 2.340?W). This station is regularly monitored by the EPA (referred to as CB130) and is situated in transitional waters in the vicinity of the head of River Corrib. Data was collected between 08:30 hrs (local summer time, 07:30 hrs UTC) and 20:30 hrs (local summer time) five days after spring tide. Discrete (surface) and integrated (tube) samples were collected every 60 minutes at each station for phytoplankton and chlorophyll a analysis. Every 30 minutes, a secchi depth reading (water clarity) was recorded.

This is a 9 month project funded by the Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Research Technological Development and Innovation Programme, National Development Plan 2000 - 2006. The 2 partners of the project are the Marine Institute and the Central Fisheries Board. The projects primary objective is to collect Benthos, Plants and Fish data (historical and new) from transitional and coastal waters and test the tools that have been put forward for determining the quality of water for the Water Framework Directive. |
