Resource or Project Abstract
There was a clear need for research on resource use in Ireland to place environmental decision-making on an evidence-based footing and provide a baseline for measuring further progress. Island Limits will calculate the resource efficiency and ecological sustainability of the Irish economy and model scenarios in key areas of the Irish economy such as food, energy and waste management. The environmental impact of Ireland?s resource use will be presented as an ecological footprint- a means of measuring and communicating sustainable resource use that will estimate the area of land needed for Ireland to function sustainably. The project was undertaken to quantify resource use in Ireland and the environmental impact of consumption. Drivers for this project include the Sustainable Development Strategy and European resources policy

Supplementary Information |
Methodologies used were the EuroStat standard economy wide material flow analysis methodology. The One Planet Business methodology for allocating imports to input-output categories. Best Foot Forward's Regional Stepwise methodology for calculating the ecological footprint.
Material Flow Analysis: Production, import, export, net supply and consumption of materials and products classified by 8-digit ProdCom code for Ireland and Northern Ireland. Emissions to air. Discharges to water. Dissipative outputs of products. Waste production and managment method. Northern Ireland and Ireland data combined to produce an all-island MFA model and a range of indicators calculated. Input-Output analysis: environmental extension of Irish Input-Output tables with resource use to calculate direct and indirect resource consumption by sector and final demand category. Ecological Footprint: biocapacity of Ireland and Northern Ireland, Ecological Footprint broken down by land type, policy area, county, activity such as farming, transport using two methodologies- Best Foot Forward's standardised method and a method created by the University of Limerick for the project. |
