Resource or Project Abstract

Current settlements and spatial settlement patterns are unsuitable for future progress towards sustainability in areas such as recycling, housing and resource usage. ?Sustainability and Future Settlement Patterns in Ireland? will provide a detailed and inclusive analysis of the relationship between Irish settlements and sustainable development. It will consider in detail the functioning and location of settlements, relationships between settlements, and the selection of sustainability indicators which are most appropriate for contemporary and future Irish settlements. A study of the relationship between sustainable development and urban settlement size was carried out by the Centre for Environmental Research, UL in 2001; ?Methodologies for Estimation of Sustainable Settlement Size?. This pilot project looked at 11 Settlements by examining 14 ?Ideal Sustainability Indicators.? The results of the study were used in the preparation of the NSS. In March 2002 a broader study of 80 settlements commenced. This 3 year ERTDI project consists of three separate yet interlinked UL research theses, which form the basis of a final report. This report will be used by the EPA, NSS & NDP. The theses concerned are titled: Indicators and Indices (Researcher: John Morrissey); Metabolism and Materials Flow (Researcher: Walter Foley); Simulation Modelling and Policy Implications (Researcher: John Leonard).

The assessments of the various elements of infrastructure in the choosen study area settlements are based on data provided to Forfás by infrastructure providers during 2001. This assessment will be subject to amendment going forward as planned investments come on stream and more up-to-date information becomes available. No attempt has been made to establish the investment required to bring particular elements of infrastructure to any town or to upgrade existing infrastructure within any town.

The contribution of John Morrisey, Walter Foley, and John Leonard should be cited in any subsequent usage of the data.

Geographical and Spatial Information Related To This Resource

Description of Geographical Characteristics of This Project or Dataset
To date we have collected data on each of the ideal indicators set out in the aforementioned pilot project for 80 settlements of varying sizes around Ireland. These towns were selected in clusters in order to enable investigation of town interactions and network effects between various settlements.
