Resource or Project Abstract

Black smoke consists of fine particles suspended in air which mainly arise from the incomplete burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil and peat, in the domestic, industrial or transport sectors. Open fires in dwelling houses are a major source of much of the particulate material emitted to air as smoke.

The main health concern associated with particulates is their potential effect on human health, notably the respiratory system, as particles of small size can be inhaled into and deposited in the respiratory
system and remain there for long periods of time.

Supplementary Information About This Resource

In this section some supplementary information about this resource is outlined. Lineage information helps us to understand why this project was carried out, what policy or research requirements did it fulfil, etc. Lineage is important in understanding the rationale behind the carrying out of a project or the collection of a specific dataset etc. Links to web sites, applications, papers, etc are outlined to provide you with additional information or supplementary reading about the project or dataset

Lineage information about this project or dataset
Directive 80/779/EEC (CEC, 1980) set out smoke standards for annual and winter periods based on
median and 98-percentile concentration levels. Directive 80/779/EEC (CEC, 1980) was revoked with effect from 1 January 2005; therefore, black smoke no longer has to be measured. PM10 is the parameter now used to measure particulates and includes the black smoke particulates. Black smoke has been measured in Ireland for over 20 years and is valuable for observing trends in air quality in towns and cities. For this reason, local authorities are encouraged to continue measuring black smoke. The EPA will continue to report the results in the Annual Air Quality Indicators report.
Supplementary Information
The black smoke level is determined by the OECD black smoke method, i.e., by reflectance analysis of the stain produced on a paper filter through which the sampled air has passed.

FILENAME CONVENTION: To intuitively guide users on the data contained in each of the dataset files the FILENAMES shown abide by a simple convention. The first part of the filename corresponds to the station location where the monitoring took place, the second refers to the pollutant measured. The third part of the filename corresponds to the year of measurement. For datasets which contain data measured over two years rather than one the year provided includes the year when measurement commented at that station site. If measurement data was collected at using a mobile monitoring station the code TR will follow the pollutant name. FILE TYPES: For the most part files will be available in one of three different formats. MS Excel spreadsheet format (look for the XLS file name),Comma Separated formats (CSV file type), or plain text (TXT file type). The latter two will open in recent versions of MS Excel.
