Resource or Project Abstract

Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is formed when fuel (mainly coal, peat and oil) containing sulphur is burned at power plants and elsewhere. High concentrations of SO2 can result in temporary breathing impairment for asthmatics. SO2 is a major precursor to acid rain, which is associated with the acidification of soils, lakes, and streams and accelerated corrosion of buildings and monuments.

Supplementary Information About This Resource

In this section some supplementary information about this resource is outlined. Lineage information helps us to understand why this project was carried out, what policy or research requirements did it fulfil, etc. Lineage is important in understanding the rationale behind the carrying out of a project or the collection of a specific dataset etc. Links to web sites, applications, papers, etc are outlined to provide you with additional information or supplementary reading about the project or dataset

Lineage information about this project or dataset
CAFE Directive 2008/50/EC establish's an hourly limit of 350 μg/m3 and an annual mean limit of 20 μg/m3 in respect of SO2. No more than 24 exceedances of the hourly limit values are allowed per year.
Supplementary Information
SO2- this is measured using an API M100 Sulphur Dioxide analyser by U.V. Fluorescence. When hit by U.V. radiation, SO2 molecules emit light. The intensity of the fluorescence radiation is proportional to the amount of molecules and therefore, the concentration.

FILENAME CONVENTION: To intuitively guide users on the data contained in each of the dataset files the FILENAMES shown abide by a simple convention. The first part of the filename corresponds to the station location where the monitoring took place, the second refers to the pollutant measured. The third part of the filename corresponds to the year of measurement. For datasets which contain data measured over two years rather than one the year provided includes the year when measurement commented at that station site. If measurement data was collected at using a mobile monitoring station the code TR will follow the pollutant name.

FILE TYPES: For the most part files will be available in one of three different formats. MS Excel spreadsheet format (look for the XLS file name),Comma Separated formats (CSV file type), or plain text (TXT file type). The latter two will open in recent versions of MS Excel.
