Resource or Project Abstract
The database comprises available information on geographical and topographical data for turloughs in counties Mayo, Roscommon, Galway and Clare. The data has been drawn from National Parks and Wildlife Service, Dept of the Environment archives on Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Special Protection Areas (SPAs), the Geological Survey of Ireland karst database, the Trinity College research archives on turloughs and Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 topographic data. The NPWS data is largely locational with attached maps. The TCD database includes vegetation mapping, invertebrate mapping and topographic mapping, particularly from the study of flooding in Gort undertaken in 1996/7 where available. The GSI data includes lithology and stratigraphy. The locational dat has been rationalized and the spatial data archive is a central repository of geographical information on turloughs drawn from these disparate sources but it is not intended as a complete record of all known turloughs. Those recorded are predominantly protected areas (70 turloughs) but not exclusively as research has not always concentrated on these. Basic data on 285 turloughs have been included.

In this section some supplementary information about this resource is outlined. Lineage information helps us to understand why this project was carried out, what policy or research requirements did it fulfil, etc. Lineage is important in understanding the rationale behind the carrying out of a project or the collection of a specific dataset etc. Links to web sites, applications, papers, etc are outlined to provide you with additional information or supplementary reading about the project or dataset
Lineage information about this project or dataset |
Data on geographical characteristics of turloughs were inconsistent and resided in a number of agencies and organizations. This database brought together the available information in a coordinated fashion, readily accessible. |
Supplementary Information |
O.S. 1;50,000 scale maps, provided by the EPA, which cover the area in which most turloughs, are included for viewing in the Turloughs project Turloughs.apr.
