Resource or Project Abstract

Field and laboratory studies related to the application of a new approach for monitoring bioaerosols in Ireland have been performed. The core of the scientific programme exploits a recently developed spectroscopic technique, (Waveband Integrated Bioaerosol Sensor model no. 4 (WIBS-4), which was designed to detect, characterise and quantify airborne biological particulate matter. It does so by means of on-line measurements made with fast-time resolution. The resulting data acquired from WIBS-4 after deployment at a number of differing environments (e.g. laboratory, urban and rural) are compared to results obtained from using the traditional off-line techniques of impact collection followed by optical microscopy. Coincident measurements of PM10 and NOx for the Cork Harbour region have also been made and are reported here. Finally, a range of PBAP species monitored in the ambient Irish atmosphere during the spring to early summer seasons of 2010 were identified and quantified.

While there has been a concerted effort in recent times to measure, characterise and understand how inorganic particulates influence adverse health outcomes and climate change, the apportionment and classification of biological pollutants has lagged behind. However more recently, Primary Biological Aerosol Particles (PBAP) have been shown to impact on the two issues. Hence the study and understanding of the dispersal of PBAP, both indoors and outdoors, especially in real-time, has become relatively significant for both atmospheric science and the health community.
